Lead

Lead on periodic table

Where lead is found on the periodic table

An editorial posted by the Grand Rapids Press Editorial Board February 27, 2009 on Mlive.com  entitled “End childhood lead poisoning” said this,

“Lead poisoning can do irreversible damage to a child but is entirely preventable.” It went on to report that “Grand Rapids is among 14 cities accounting for 79 percent of all cases of poisoning in 2007.”

This is good reason to protect our families.

Potential environmental sources of exposure (but not limited to):

  • Dust and chips from deteriorating exterior and interior paint
  • Bare soil around dwelling (in child play areas, sandboxes, gardens)
  • House dust
  • Carpet
  • Hard floors
  • Window sills and troughs
  • Plumbing pipes
  • Water
  • Ceramics, pottery, lead crystal
  • Lead-soldered cans (imported)
  • Burning lead-painted wood
  • Soil and dust from nearby industries
  • Mini-blinds (imported)
  • Candles with lead wicks
  • Some imported toys

Lake State Inspection provides services to sample for lead.

Here is an example of a dust sample plan that we would preform. dust samples would be collected from each of the following areas:

  • One from the floor of the child’s principle play area, TV or living room.
  • One from the interior window sill of the most frequently opened window in the child’s principle play area.
  • One from the floor of the kitchen.
  • One from the window trough of the kitchen window (if inaccessible, another interior window sill sample should be collected).
  • One from the floor of the bedroom of the youngest child (older than 6 months).
  • One from the interior window sill of the bedroom of the youngest child (older than 6 months).
  • One from the floor of the bedroom of the next oldest child, if any.
